Tips on maintaining your timeless possession: Silk Sarees and Dupattas

Silk Saree/Dupatta/Kurta is part of every Indian woman’s closet as they look elegant and gorgeous. Silk is a timeless classic and fits every occasion. Though expensive, most of us love to buy silk sarees/ kurta/dupattas/scarf……the list is just endless. And then you have sarees which are your timeless collection passed down to you from your Grand Ma and Maa. The emotional connection with these sarees is priceless and you want to possess them forever.
Silk is a delicate, high-maintenance fabric and can get damaged easily if not stored properly. Hence you need to be extra careful when it comes to maintaining these.
Many times, it happens that these sarees/kurtas get spoilt because of the humid climate, or are eaten by insects like a moth, silverfish, cockroaches, etc., or become dull because of excessive exposure to light. Since silk is a natural fiber that consists of protein it is vulnerable to deterioration. Being organic in nature, factors like humidity and light can damage the fabric and it can also attract insects.
Here are some tips to help you maintain your silk collection:
-
- Take a few cloves, wrap them in a cotton/muslin cloth, and put them in the corners of your cupboard. This is helpful in keeping insects at bay.
- You can pack dried Neem leaves in a cotton/ muslin cloth bag and keep them in the corners of the cupboard. Neem leaves are easily available and have anti-pest and anti-fungal properties, hence placing these proves to be a very effective remedy. Avoid putting Neem leaves directly on the clothes as they can leave stains.
- Placing Silica gel packs in the storage units can help in protecting these garments. These non-toxic crystals absorb moisture and protect silk clothes from insects as well. These packs last for about 3-4 months depending upon the size. Once the pack loses its effectiveness, it can be regenerated by keeping it in direct sunlight for a few hours.
- Avoid washing silk clothes at home. Get it dry cleaned to sidestep any kind of damage.
- In case you plan to wash these at home, ensure using a mild detergent and avoid wringing too much. Never dry silk clothes in direct sun light and always place another cloth on top of it while ironing.
- Wrap them in a muslin/cotton cloth and store them separately. This will prevent the Zari from getting directly exposed to air and getting oxidized. Your old discarded cotton dupattas can prove handy in storing these.
- Avoid storing silk sarees with other work sarees as they can damage the surface.
- Never use metal hangers for this fabric as they are prone to corrosion. You can use plastic or wooden hangers instead.
- Open and refold the sarees every 3-6 months and ensure that there is no sharp crease.
- While folding the saree, see that the side that contains the Zari is folded inwards in order to protect its sheen.
- Store the fabric in a dark and dry place to avoid any fading.
- Never store silk in plastic covers as it leads to discoloration.
- Avoid using Naphthalene balls in the cupboards as even though it kills insects, it leaves a strong smell. The clothes need to be washed before using or kept in direct sunlight to get rid of the smell. In case you have kids/pets at home, the use of naphthalene balls might be risky.
- Nowadays acid-free sheets/acid-free tissues are available in the market. These are a good option to place in your cupboards for long-term storage of silk clothes. These sheets prevent damage/discoloration of the fabric.
- Air your silk clothes after use. Never fold them immediately after you have used them.
- Never apply perfumes directly on the Zari as the sheen will become dull.
